The Eagles return five starters and 14 letterwinners to the 2016 squad.
STATESBORO, Ga. – Volleyball coach Dustin Wood announced today that Kacey Baker (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union), Kali Cahill (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy) and Carly Turner (Austin, Texas/Westlake) have signed a National Letter of Intent to attend Georgia Southern and compete for the Eagles in the 2016 season.
"I am very excited about this group of players coming in," said Wood. "We brought some players in who can play right away and will help us become a much better program in the future. They also know how to be leaders, which we were looking for when recruiting this class. I am excited to see them in Blue and White and see what they can do on the floor and the classroom for Georgia Southern."
Kacey Baker, 6-3, Middle, Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union, Mizuno Long Beach
Lettered three seasons for Coach Tommy Chaffins at Redondo Union and named all-tournament at the 2015 Power Classic… Competed for Coach Joy Fuerbringer for the Mizuno Long Beach club team.
Wood on Baker: "Kacey will be a great middle blocker for our program. We were on and off again in the recruiting process, but we enjoyed getting to know her and saw what she can bring to our program as a player and person. She improved so much in the last year in club season, and the sky is the limit with her. She has a good arm and has a big block. She reads the game really well. She is a big middle at 6-foot-3, who can handle the physical middles that we will see in the Sun Belt. I can't wait for her to get in here to start training and for her to be able to work with our strength coach. She has her best years ahead of her, which will be exciting to see."
Kali Cahill, 5-11, Setter, Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy, Elite VBTC
Lettered two years at Olentangy High School and led her team to the OOC Conference title in 2013… Played for coaches Dave and Alisa Franklin in the Elite VBTC club program… Recognized by Prepvolleyball.com multiple times in the 2015 club season for being an offensive strong front… Named as a Player to Watch at several tournaments… Helped team place ninth in gold at AAU national championship in national division in 2014… Elite VBTC also took first place in the March Madness Tournament in 2014, won gold at Dayton Juniors Presidents Day Cup in 2015 and won silver in the national division at AAU National Championship in 2015.
Wood on Cahill: "We have had our eyes on Kali for a while. What drew me to Kali was her leadership on the floor. She is in control of the offense and has great location. She plays with a lot of passion and is always making her teammates better. I feel that we have one of the top setters in the nation coming to us. She picked Georgia Southern over some other really big schools in the top-25 national rankings. She graduated high school early and will be training with our program in January so she will have a head start on getting to know our offense and system."
Carly Turner, 6-3, Outside Hitter, Austin Texas/Westlake, Austin Juniors
Lettered two seasons for Coach Al Bennett and was a team captain in 2015… Helped lead her team to a 32-0 record in the district over the 2014 and 2015 seasons, and Westlake was ranked second in the state and 16th in the nation in 2014… Tallied 276 kills, 220 digs, 52 blocks and 49 aces while hitting .239 as a senior… Also played varsity basketball and ran track in high school… Played for Coach Amy Faber Knowles on Austin Juniors club team… Comes from an athletic family – mother, Lama Turner, played volleyball at Pepperdine, and sister, Jesse, plays volleyball at South Carolina.
Wood on Turner: "Carly will be a great addition to our program. She is a great kid and has a great family. At 6-foot-3, she has the size and athleticism as an outside hitter to compete at a high level. She has a high ceiling and passes extremely well, which will help her adjust to the college game. She will have to develop some of the detailed skill set at this level, but when she does, she is going to be a force in the Sun Belt. It's hard coming in as a freshman outside in our system, because of all the responsibility they have on the floor. Once the game slows down for Carly, she is going to be a special player here, and I believe it will slow down for sooner than later once she gets some time in our gym."
