KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Georgia Southern posted a 292 in the first round of the Kiawah Classic by Aramark at Turtle Point Golf Course Sunday, and the Eagles are tied for fourth with two rounds left to play.
Host Charleston Southern (-1) leads the field, and Virginia (+1) is tied for second with Augusta. Missouri and Virginia Tech are tied with the Eagles (+4), and Duke and Georgia Tech (+5) are tied for seventh, just one stroke back.
Steven Fisk led the Eagles with an even-par 72 today and is tied for 16th, while Jonas Vaisanen and Jake Storey each shot 73. Cody O'Toole posted a 74, and Archer Price carded a 77.
The story
The Eagles started on the back nine today, and Fisk birdied holes 12 and 13 and then notched five straight pars to make the turn at 2-under. The freshman bogeyed holes 1 and 3 before parring the rest of the way. After shooting 3-over on the back nine, Vaisanen got going on the front and birdied two of his last three holes of the round. Storey had a chance to shoot low if not for a couple double bogeys on his card. The sophomore birdied two of his first four holes and shot 1-under on his final nine holes of the day. O'Toole was 1-under through 14 holes after nine straight pars followed by a birdie on hole 5. The junior had some trouble coming in to finish with a 74.
Quotable from Coach Carter Collins
"This course demands your attention off the tee, and we did a good job of sticking to a conservative game plan off the tee and that opened up some opportunities to the green. We will need to stick to that discipline if we are to be successful the rest of the way. There is still a long ways to go in this event, but with the leaderboard bunched up, we have time to climb the board and accomplish our goals for the week."
Next up
The Eagles tee off hole 1 at 9:50 a.m. tomorrow and are paired with Augusta and Virginia Tech.
