LOS CABOS, Mexico – Cody O'Toole shot a 3-under-par 69, and the Georgia Southern men's golf squad posted a team total of 289 and is in third place after the first round of the Cabo del Sol Intercollegiate Sunday.
Georgia Southern (+1) is three strokes behind UC Irvine (-2) and five back of leader Georgia State (-4). UT Arlington (+3) and CSU-Northridge are tied for fourth, and Santa Clara (+5) is sixth.
O'Toole is tied for second on the individual leader board, two strokes behind leader Nathan Mallonee (-5) of Georgia State.
Jake Storey carded a 1-under-par 71 and is tied for 10th. Henry Mabbett shot a 74, Steven Fisk shot a 75 and Archer Price carded a 77. Jonas Vaisanen, who is playing as an individual this week, carded a 73 and is tied for 19th.
The story
O'Toole logged six birdies and was 6-under-par after his first 13 holes. Three bogeys coming in moved the junior into second place. Storey was 2-under through 15 holes before bogeying holes 16 and 17. The sophomore birdied 18 to stay under par for the day. Mabbett had three birdies on the day and was 1-over through 14 holes. The senior rallied for a birdie on hole 17 after a double bogey on the par-5 15th. After a birdie on hole 16, Fisk was 1-over for the round, but the freshman double bogeyed the par-3 17th hole. Vaisanen had three birdies and four bogeys on the day and scored par or better on nine straight holes during his round.
Quotable from Coach Carter Collins
"All in all, it was a decent day on the course for the team. We definitely left a few shots on the back nine, but we have a chance to bounce back from that tomorrow. We get to play a different course tomorrow, one that is a little more forgiving off the tee so our plan is to attack from the fairway and try and make up some ground on the leaders. There is plenty of golf left, but we need to play very solid from here on out to achieve our goals for the week."
