Strong Second Half Leads Arkansas State over Women’s Basketball

JONESBORO, Ark. – Aundrea Gamble scored 23 points, and Arkansas State shot 58 percent in the second half to post an 86-63 Sun Belt Conference women's basketball victory over Georgia Southern Thursday evening in the Convocation Center.

Anna Claire Knight led Georgia Southern (3-9, 0-3) with 14 points, nine rebounds and four assists, while Patrice Butler scored 13 points. Trellanie English-Lurry and Sierra Kirkland each netted eight, and Kirkland added four rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals.

Jasmine Hunt tallied 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Red Wolves (9-5, 4-0), and Khadi Brown-Haywood scored 16. Hanna Qedan posted 11 points and three assists.

Georgia Southern shot 48 percent in the back-and-forth first frame, which featured seven ties and eight lead changes, and trailed 37-35 at halftime. The Red Wolves flipped the script in the second frame, held the Eagles to 38 percent shooting and outscored Georgia Southern by 21 points.

"We played aggressively and confidently on the offensive end and did a nice job executing our defensive game plan in the first half," said Georgia Southern coach Chris Vozab. "We knew they would make a run in the second half, and we let them get going in transition. Some of the same shots we were making in the first half didn't go down in the second half, and they were able to pull away."

The Eagles took a two-point lead on a Briana Jones layup early in the second half, but the Red Wolves responded with a 17-2 run to open a 56-43 lead. Gamble scored seven points during the run.

A layup by Sierra Kirkland and a 3-pointer from the corner by Trellanie English-Lurry cut the margin to eight, but Arkansas State pushed again with 11 straight points as the lead grew to 65-48 with 11 minutes to play.

"I'm pleased with the confidence we played with for much of the game against a good team in a difficult environment, but we need to make sure we stay aggressive for 40 minutes," said Vozab.

The Eagles cap their two game road trip at South Alabama Saturday. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. Eastern.
