Box Score BOULDER, Colo. – Jessica Wynn and Amanda Orchard each tallied 11 kills to lead Pitt to a 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-20) non-conference volleyball victory over Georgia Southern in the Omni Classic at Colorado University Friday night.
Senior
Jamie DeRatt recorded nine kills to lead the Eagles (0-4), and senior
Kym Coley registered eight. Freshman
Cathrine Murray logged six kills and hit over .300 for the second straight match.
Pitt hit .494 as a team in the match, and the Eagles had just 15 digs. The Eagles hit .244 overall and .321 in the third set, but the Panthers (4-0) were too much on the offensive end. They converted on 57 percent of their attack attempts in the first set and 45.5 percent in each of the last two.
Georgia Southern had brief early leads in each of the first two sets but could not withstand Pitt's runs and after the Panthers opened leads, never trimmed the margin to less than four points. The Panthers raced out to a 6-1 cushion in the third, and after Georgia Southern cut the margin to 12-11, Pitt used an 8-2 spurt to pull away.
"It was a tough one to swallow," said Georgia Southern coach
Dustin Wood. "I thought we were prepared going into the match but had some poor individual performances, and we were out-digged and out-hit, which isn't going to win you many matches. We passed extremely well tonight but couldn't get our offense going after the pass, setting and attacking.
Cathrine Murray did a great job attacking tonight, and she has a bright future ahead of her. We will regroup tonight and have a very tough match next against a Pac 12 powerhouse in Colorado tomorrow."
The Eagles play two matches in the Omni Classic Saturday. Georgia Southern faces host Colorado at 2 p.m. Eastern and Portland State at 7:30 p.m.
