Sophomore ran for a career-best 187 yards and two touchdowns in first league win
NEW ORLEANS – Georgia Southern running back Matt Breida was named the Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Week as announced by the league office today, Monday, September 22nd. The sophomore from Brooksville, Fla., rushed for a career-best 187 yards against South Alabama as Georgia Southern picked up its first-ever conference win. Breida added two touchdowns against the Jaguars for a league-leading seven total on the year.
Breida led off the scoring to give the Eagles' a 7-0 lead with a 64-yard touchdown run in the first quarter at South Alabama. He punched it in from one yard out in the third quarter for his second touchdown of the night for his third-straight game with two touchdowns.
Of his single-game total of 187 yards rushing last Saturday, with 103 of those yards coming in the first quarter, Breida would rank 26th nationally in that category. He currently averages 8.9 yards per carry, which would rank sixth among the nation's leaders.
Georgia Southern plays host to Appalachian State Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. on ESPNU for the Eagles' first-ever home Sun Belt Conference game. Tickets are available at GSEagles.com/fbtix or by calling 1-800-GSU-WINS.
