KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Scott Wolfes carded a 3-under 69, and the Georgia Southern men's golf team combined for a total of 295 in the first round of the Invitational at The Ocean Course Friday.
South Florida (-6) shot an all-time tournament low of 282 to claim the lead, and College of Charleston (+3) is in second. Duke (+4) and Kentucky are tied for third, three strokes ahead of the Eagles (+7). Troy (+9) and Georgia State are tied for sixth, two strokes behind Georgia Southern.
Wolfes is in a four-way tie for third, one stroke out of second and two shots off the leader, Cooper Musselman (-5) of Kentucky.
"It was a good round turned in by Scott, but as a team, we didn't quite take advantage of the benign Kiawah conditions," said Georgia Southern coach Carter Collins. "I felt like we played better and better as the round went on, and I'm proud of the effort. We're looking forward to competing again tomorrow at a great tournament course."
Charlie Martin shot a 74, and Matt Mierzejewski finished with a 75. Sam Towler shot a 77, and Henry Mabbett posted an 83. Andrew Klasing, who is playing as an individual this week, shot a 79.
The Eagles started on hole 10 today, and Wolfes birdied the par-5 11th hole and the par-4 18th to make the turn at 1-under-par. The senior got to 4-under with birdies on holes 1, 4 and 5 before a bogey on nine left him at 3-under.
Martin birdied the 11th hole but three bogeys on his first nine holes made him 2-over at the turn. The senior bogeyed hole 1 and birdied hole 4 before finishing the round with five straight pars.
Mierzejewski was even after his first two holes but got into trouble with double bogeys on holes 13 and 15. The senior posted three birdies and three bogeys on his final nine to finish 3-over for the day.
Towler got off to a rough start with bogeys on his first three holes, but battled back to 1-over with birdies on holes 18 and 1 as he made the turn. The sophomore fell to 3-over with a double bogey on hole 4 and added bogeys on 5 and 6 to finish 5-over.
Mabbett was 1-under after six holes but ran into trouble on 16 and 17, where he recorded double bogeys and added two more on holes 2 and 3. Klasing shot 1-under on the front nine after shooting 8-over on the back.
Second round action is set for tomorrow at The Ocean Course. The Eagles will be paired with Kentucky and new Sun Belt brethren Troy and tee off hole 1 at 12:30 p.m.
