STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Southern senior Will Evans and associate head coach Carter Collins will try to make their U.S. Open dreams come true in Sectional Qualifying events today.
Thirty-six grueling holes in one day against some of the top golfers in the country stand in the way of the duo earning spots into the 114th playing of the U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2, in Pinehurst, N.C., June 12-15.
Sectional qualifying is the second and final stage for U.S. Open hopefuls. The number of qualifying spots is determined by the quality and quantity of the field at each location. There are 12 sectional sites this year - 10 in the U.S., one in England and one in Japan.
Evans shot a 71 in local qualifying at Marsh Creek May 13, and was a first alternate for Sectionals, while Collins took home medalist honors and earned a spot in Sectionals after shooting a 68 at the same tournament.
Evans is playing at Colonial Country Club in Memphis, Tennessee, in a field of 145 golfers competing for 13 spots. His field includes Major champions David Duval (2001 British Open), Shaun Micheel (2003 PGA) and David Toms (2001 PGA).
"It was kind of a surprise to make it to sectionals, and it's an honor to be given any opportunity to play," said Evans. "I can't wait to test my game against some of the best players in the world."
Collins is playing at Old Oaks Country Club/ Century Country Club in Purchase, N.Y., with 80 golfers in the field competing for four spots. His field includes two-time U.S. Open Champion Lee Janzen (1993 and 1998).
"I'm happy for the opportunity," said Collins. "I'm not sure where it will take me, but I'm excited to give it a shot."
The game's most democratic major championship since 1895, the U.S. Open offers an opportunity to play on golf''s biggest stage alongside golf's biggest names. The two-stage qualification process helps decide a field of 156 players from some 9,800 entrants.
