STATESBORO, Ga. – Tournaments at Florida, Colorado and North Carolina and a 20-match slate for the Eagles' inaugural season in the Sun Belt Conference highlight the Georgia Southern 2014 volleyball schedule, announced today by head coach Dustin Wood.
In its non-conference slate, Georgia Southern will battle six teams that made the NCAA Tournament last season, three of which were ranked in the top-25. The Eagles' non-conference opponents had an average RPI of 51 in 2013. The Eagles will play Florida (final ranking of 15), Kentucky (20) and North Carolina (25). Georgia Southern will also take on Oklahoma and Colorado, both of which received votes in the AVCA final poll.
"Our non-conference schedule is one of the toughest in the country," said Wood. "This will prepare our program for the Sun Belt schedule, but more importantly, it will prepare us for postseason play. Our goal is to get to the NCAA Tournament and advance past the first round and beyond. This is an exciting time for Georgia Southern volleyball, and we look forward to the challenges next year."
The Eagles enter the Sun Belt Conference in 2014 and will play 20 matches in league play, meeting each opponent in a home-and-home series. Texas State, which finished third in the regular season, is the defending Sun Belt Tournament champion, while outgoing member Western Kentucky won the regular-season title and UALR placed second. Georgia Southern played three Sun Belt teams in 2013, topping South Alabama and Arkansas State by identical 3-1 scores on neutral floors and falling 3-0 at Troy.
"We are looking forward to our inaugural season in the Sun Belt Conference," said Wood. "We are excited to play the high-caliber teams in the Sun Belt, as well as travel to new places and host Sun Belt teams in our amazing atmosphere in Hanner Fieldhouse."
Georgia Southern won the 2013 Southern Conference Tournament Championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament, finishing with a 28-6 record, which tied the most wins in school history. It was the Eagles' fourth NCAA Tournament appearance and second in the last four seasons.
Georgia Southern returns seven letterwinners and six starters to the 2014 squad, including 2013 All-SoCon selections Jamie DeRatt, Kym Coley and Katalin Minnerly.
Season tickets for Georgia Southern volleyball are $20, and single-game tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for youth 12-and-under. The Eagles will play 11 home matches in 2014.
