Men’s Golf Eagles in the Pros: Fulford Notches Two Wins

STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Southern alum Spence Fulford has gotten his 2014 spring off to a great start with two victories on the Hopkins Tour in Georgia.
Fulford overcame a 9-shot deficit to win the Tifton Classic April 11 and took home the Orchard Hills Classic two weeks later for his fourth professional victory. The Hopkins Tour is formerly known as the Peach State Tour.
At the Tifton Classic, Fulford fired a Golf Club of South Georgia course record 62 in the final round, posting birdie, birdie, birdie, eagle on his last four holes to force a playoff. The 2010 Georgia Southern graduate went on to eagle the playoff hole for the win, making him 7-under par on his last five holes.
Fulford credits changes he made to his putter for his most recent professional success. About seven months ago, he met with his swing coach, Todd Anderson, and club fitter, Craig Allan, at the Sea Island Golf Center, where he trains.
"I've always hit the ball pretty well but struggled on the greens and with my short game," said Fulford.
The trio discussed the issue and decided to add two inches to his putter and widen the grip to displace the weight properly. The change has helped him log a 69.22 stroke average through nine rounds this season, and he is currently first on the Hopkins Tour money list with almost $25,000.
"I felt awkward over the ball and now I feel more comfortable when I address the ball," said Fulford. "Now, my setup is the same every time, which leads to a consistent stroke, and that's what I was missing."
Fulford posted a 74.11 scoring average in 94 rounds during his career at Georgia Southern. The Cordele, Ga., native notched six career top-10 finishes and placed in the top-5 five times. One of his best outings came in the 2009 NCAA Regionals, where he shot 70-69-66=205 (-8) to place fifth. He turned pro in 2011 and in 2013, he finished fourth in U.S. Open Local Qualifying to advance to Sectional Qualifying.
Fulford hopes to parlay his professional success into reaching the ultimate dream of playing on the PGA Tour. The Hopkins Tour has 18 events, all over the state of Georgia, which keeps the travel costs down, and he plans to play in 14. It awards its top-5 members at the end of the season Web.com Tour Q-School reimbursement and has a couple exemptions to Web.com Tour events as well.
Fulford was finishing up school in the summer of 2010, when current Eagle seniors Hayden Anderson and Will Evans began their careers and got to know the duo well. He has tracked the Eagles success on the course this season and talked to the team following their Southern Conference Championship victory last week.
"I just told them how proud I was," said Fulford. "Hopefully, they can keep it going at regionals."
