Thomas and Purvis Sweep SoCon Softball Monthly Awards

STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Southern Softball has swept the SoCon's Pitcher and Player of the Month for March 2014 with Sarah Purvis and Kourtny Thomas taking the awards. It is the second Pitcher of the Month Award for Purvis this season and Thomas' first SoCon monthly honor as well as the Eagles' first Player of the Month Award since March 2012.
Purvis recorded a 1.76 ERA in the season's second month, going 9-3 with a perfect game and a no hitter. The senior pitcher threw five of her league-best eight shutouts on the month along with a pair of SoCon Pitcher of the Week honors. She struck out 110 batters in March, a total that equals the second-place total in the SoCon strikeouts list for the entire 2014 season.
Early in the month she tossed her fourth career no-hitter against future #FunBelt foe Troy. Four days later she recorded her third career perfect game against Kennesaw State. She also delivered a two-hitter against No. 3 Tennessee and a pair of one-hitters against Western Carolina to close the month.
Kourtny Thomas had a magical month of March with a .407 average and seven home runs while driving in 18 runs. She had a pair of six-game hit streaks and three games with 3 RBIs. Versus Holy Cross, Thomas went 3-for-3 with two runs and 3 RBIs on a pair of home runs. She reached base in 19 games for the month including 16-straight to close the month.
Georgia Southern Softball travels to face Appalachian State in a #FunBelt preview. The series begins on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. with an afternoon doubleheader.
