SPARTANBURG, Ga. – Georgia Southern left its mark on the Southern Conference in its final outdoor championship meet with the record in the 4x100m Relay with a 44.50 time, with junior
Jasmin Walker named both the Most Outstanding Track Performer and the Most Outstanding Athlete for the 2014 Championships. Walker won the Long Jump Saturday, was a member of the winning 4x100m Relay team and finished second in 100m and third in the 200m races.
The Eagle 4x100m Relay, which broke the University record set in 2007, put up the time Sunday that currently ranks 12th in the nation and seventh in the East region. In addition to the national mark, four University records were broken Sunday, three champions crowned and 14 personal bests also set. The Eagles finished their run in the SoCon with a fifth-place finish overall.
"Placement doesn't say what happened today as we had some great individual performances," said Track and Field Head Coach Marlo Mincey. "For example, two individuals broke very old record, probably a 10-year old University record, in the 200, that was a really big mark for our program. To set a conference record and break several school records, I think we came out on top individually."
Senior
Aarian Tipton set the University record in the 200m Dash with a 23.59, breaking Nicole Brown's 2007 record. Sherril McFarlane broke her own records in both the 800m and 1500m races, taking more than four full seconds off her previous 1500m time with a 4:36.59. The 4x100m Relay team smashed the previous SoCon record time of 45.46 after being just 0.01 seconds away from tying the mark last year.
The 4X400m Relay team went to the podium in the final event of the day and of the meet. The Eagles took the top spot with a 3:43.20, a time that ranks in the top-five all-time performances.
Dana Edwards,
Asha Stegall,
Cherrelle King and
Kimberly Thomas were the final SoCon track champions for the Eagles, capping a weekend that witnessed Georgia Southern with 10 podium presentations for top-three finishes over the two-day event.
The Eagles dominated in the 100m and 200m Dash events, taking spots two through five for 23 points in the 100m event and 18 points in the 200m. Tipton led the Eagles in the 200m for second, with Walker in third and senior Jordan Fordman in fifth. Walker finished second in the 100m with Tipton,
Alyssa Felton and Fordham finishing in the number-three through number-five spots. Walker's 200m time of 23.68 is second behind Tipton's record-setting performance.
"I was really stressed going into the finals because I wanted to run what I know I can run and I wanted to podium in all my events because I hadn't done that in the 200m event yet," said junior
Jasmin Walker, three-time outdoor champion in the Long Jump and part of the SoCon champion and record 4x100m Relay team. "I was glad I was able to do what I was able to do and competing at my top level and not giving up. As far as the 4x100, I was so happy because I knew we could do it."
Dana Edwards, the lead leg for the winning 4X400m Relay team, posted the second-fastest time in Georgia Southern history in the 400m Hurdles with a 1:00.23 for third place. She tied her personal best in the 100m Hurdles with a 14.73 time to add points to Georgia Southern's total. Felton took fourth in the 100m Hurdles with a personal best 14.48, best time for the Eagles this season.
Sophomore
Ashleigh Rasheed started the day with a third-place finish in the Heptathlon with a personal best 4,490 points which puts her sixth on the all-time list for performances. She also earned a third-place finish in the Triple Jump with a 12.20m (40'0.50") for her career best in that outdoor event.
Brianna Charles also PRed in the Triple Jump with an 11.13m (36'6.25") mark for sixth place overall.
Georgia Southern begins competition in the Sun Belt Conference this fall.
"We're excited. To sweep the 100m the way we did, it does a lot to show that these ladies are ready. I knew we were ready, but it was good to see that we were ready. Now to put our goals in place next year, with our recruiting class, we'll become a better well-rounded program."
