PINEHURST, N.C. – Scott Wolfes matched the lowest round of the tournament with a 6-under-par 66, and Georgia Southern shot 4-under as a team to move into second place after day two of the Southern Conference Men's Golf Championships at National Golf Club Monday.
Wolfes matched his career low, which he has shot three times, most recently in the 2013 Gator Invitational at Mark Bostic Golf Course at the University of Florida. The junior moved to 1-under for the tournament and is tied for fourth in the individual standings with teammate Will Evans (-1), Davidson's Richard Fountain (-1) and Chattanooga's Chris Robb (-1).
Charlie Martin shot a 2-under-par 70 to move to 1-over for the tournament and into a tie for ninth place with Davidson's David Sargent (+1). Evans fired an even-par 72, Henry Mabbett finished with a 76 and Hayden Anderson posted a 78.
Georgia Southern (+4) is four strokes behind Western Carolina (E), and a stroke ahead of Chattanooga (+5). UNCG (+9) is in fourth and Davidson (+11) is fifth.
Western Carolina's J.T. Poston (-10) continued to pull away from the field by firing a 66, putting him eight strokes ahead of UNCG's Roy Dixon (-2) and Carter Jenkins (-2), who are tied for second.
"It was a good day for the Eagles, starting with Scott's sensational, bogey-free 66," said Georgia Southern coach Larry Mays. "We had two good rounds with Charlie birdieing 18 to shoot 70, and Will gave us a solid round. It's going to be a shootout tomorrow. We'll need four good scores to have a shot at catching Western Carolina and keeping the others at bay."
Wolfes had a clean card with four birdies, including three on the front nine, to go along with an eagle on the par-5 10th hole. After a birdie on hole 12, he closed his day with six straight pars.
"I was hitting it a little better off the tee, making some putts, which always helps, and I was just having fun," said Wolfes. "Hopefully, I can keep it going tomorrow."
Martin started his day with seven straight pars, and a birdie on hole 8 moved him to 1-under. The junior jumped to 3-under following birdies on 10 and 12 but dropped back to 1-under with bogeys on 15 and 17. He finished with a birdie on 18.
Birdies on holes 3 and 5 helped Evans play his first 11 holes of the day 2-under. The senior had three bogeys and a birdie on the back for his 72.
The third and final round is set for Tuesday, and the Eagles, who are paired with Western Carolina and Chattanooga, will tee off at 8:50 a.m. Mabbett will lead things off, followed by Anderson, Martin, Evans and Wolfes.
