PINEHURST, N.C. – Will Evans shot a 1-under-par 71 in the first round of the Southern Conference Men's Golf Championships at National Golf Club Sunday afternoon, and Georgia Southern is tied for third after the first day of action.
It was a cool, windy day on the course, and only six golfers in the 50-player field shot par or better. Georgia Southern posted a 296 (+8) and is tied with Furman, two strokes behind Western Carolina (+6) and Davidson, which both shot 294. Chattanooga (+9) is one shot behind the Eagles, followed by UNCG (+12).
Western Carolina's J.T. Poston (-4) leads the tournament after firing a 68, and Davidson's David Sargent (-2) shot a 70. Evans (-1) is tied for third with Roy Dixon of UNCG.
Evans was 1-over before three straight birdies on holes 9, 10 and 11. A bogey on hole 14 dropped him to 1-under, and the senior parred the last four holes.
Hayden Anderson posted a 1-over-par 73 and is tied for seventh. He was 4-over through his first 14 holes, but the senior finished with a flurry, with an eagle on hole 15 and a birdie on 18.
Charlie Martin shot a 75, Scott Wolfes carded a 77 and Henry Mabbett notched a 78 for the Eagles.
"It's a hard golf course with some tough hole locations out there today," said Georgia Southern coach Larry Mays. "Hayden had a great finish with an eagle and a birdie coming in to get us a good round, and Will played solid pretty much all day. The guys hung in there for a long time; we left just a few too many shots out there that hurt us in today's round."
Martin had just one blemish on the front nine, a bogey on the par-3 second hole, and was even after a birdie on hole 14. The junior struggled down the stretch, with bogeys on 15, 16 and 17 to finish 3-over.
Wolfes struggled coming in as well, with a double bogey on 15 and bogeys on 17 and 18. The junior was even through 13 holes, sparked by an eagle on hole 8. Mabbett tied the team lead with three birdies on the afternoon but was hurt by double bogeys on holes 4 and 10.
"We had a couple finishes we'd like to have back obviously, but we just have to get after it tomorrow and the next day and close the gap," said Mays.
The second round is set for Monday, and the Eagles will tee off at 9:40 a.m. Mabbett will lead things off, followed by Wolfes, Martin, Anderson and Evans. Georgia Southern will play with Chattanooga and UNCG.
