
Track & Field Finishes Third in Overall Standings at Indoor Championships

Georgia Southern posts fourth-highest points total in history
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Georgia Southern Track and Field posted 119 points, the fourth-highest point total scored in its history at the SoCon Indoor Championships, but was nudged out of second place on the second day of competition. The Eagle 4x400m Relay team captured its title in the final event of the meet, but score adjustments in an earlier event moved Appalachian State to the runner up spot with 120.5 points. Western Carolina won its second-straight title with 132 points.
Over the two-day event, a total of 35 personal bests were recorded and Eagles were on the presentation podium nine times with two individual championships and one relay team title. Junior Jasmin Walker ends her SoCon career with two indoor Long Jump championships and extended Georgia Southern's win to four. Sherril McFarlane became the first Eagle to win an 800m conference title.
Two University records fell on Sunday with freshman Kelsey Arnold smashing her previous best for a 16.97m (55-8.25) in the Weight Throw. McFarlane clipped .02 seconds off her own school record in the 800m with a time of 2:10.54.
Dana Edwards, McFarlane, Cherrelle King and Asha Stegal paced Georgia Southern to its best SoCon championship time in the 4x400m Relay since the 2007 event with a 3:50.02 mark. The quartet finished more than a second ahead of second-place Appalachian State.
Georgia Southern posted 28 points early in the day with 16 points coming in the 60m Dash as Jasmin Walker took second place and improved her personal best to 7.51 for second on the program's all-time list. Jordan Fordham and Alyssa Felton also scored with fourth and sixth-place finishes respectively.
Twelve more points were added to the total when Felton put up eight points in the first racing event contested on Sunday with a second-place finish in the 60m Hurdles. Her 8.74 time moved her to fifth on the Eagles' chart. Dana Edwards recorded a personal best of 8.88 to finish in the top five in the event.
Stegall and Dana Edwards added to the point total in the 400m event prior to competing in the winning 4x400m Relay. Stegall ran the first sub-56 second race of the season, good for second place, eight points and the number-two spot on the Eagles's all-time list. Dana Edwards had her second personal best of the day in the final, contributing with her finish.
Georgia Southern took third, fourth and fifth and all three Eagles set personal bests in the 200m Dash with Aarian Tipton making her way to the podium in third. Her time of 24.81 ranks fourth in Eagle history.
In one of the final events of the day, sophomore Ashleigh Rasheed launched herself into the Georgia Southern record books with her Triple Jump performance. Rasheed eclipsed the 12 meter mark for the second time in her career with a 12.31 meter (40-4.75) performance for second place in the event.
The Eagles turn their attention to the outdoor season, which begins Friday, March 7th at the Palmetto Classic in Charleston, S.C.
