GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Three Georgia Southern golfers are in the top-30, and the Eagles are fifth in the team standings after the first two rounds of play at the SunTrust Gator Invitational Saturday at the Mark Bostick Golf Club.
The third and final round will be played tomorrow, and the Eagles will tee off hole 1 at 8:20 a.m.
Georgia Southern (+23) is three strokes clear of College of Charleston (+26) and seven back of third-place Florida State (+16). Arkansas leads the tournament (+10) followed by Mercer (+13), and Vanderbilt is in fourth (+17).
Scott Wolfes is tied for 15th with a 71-74=145, and Charlie Martin is tied for 21st after posting a 74-72=146. Will Evans is tied for 27th after carding a 75-72=147, and Kim Koivu is tied for 34th with a 75-73=148.
Matthew Mierzejewski, who is playing as an individual, is also tied for 34th with a 74-74=148, and Hayden Anderson shot 72-79=151.
"We hit a rough stretch in the second round but fought hard to rally – three of our four counters birdied the last hole, and the fourth birdied his second to last," said Georgia Southern coach Larry Mays. "We're caught in the college golf accordion as there are only 12 strokes separating third from 10th, but if we can finish strong tomorrow and stay in the top-5, it'd be a nice way to start the spring."
Wolfes' 71 in the first round was the low score of the day as the junior parred his first 10 holes and posted a birdie and two bogeys. After bogeying four of his first six holes in the first round, Anderson notched three birdies in the last 12 and was 2-under par the rest of the way.
Martin and Evans each led the Eagles by carding a 72 in the second round. Martin played his final nine of the day 1-under, and Evans began his final 18 with five straight pars and played his final three at 1-under. Koivu was even through his first nine of the second round, had a double bogey on hole 1 but finished the day with a birdie for a 73.
