GREENSBORO, N.C. – Lucy Mason led four UNCG scorers in double figures with 18 points to go along with seven rebounds and five assists to lead the Spartans to a 76-65 Southern Conference women's basketball victory over Georgia Southern Monday night in Fleming Gymnasium.
Anna Claire Knight posted 22 points and nine rebounds to lead Georgia Southern (7-17, 5-8), and Angel McGowan, making her first career start in place of injured senior MiMi DuBose, tallied 18 points, four rebounds and four steals.
Mason was 7-of-9 from the floor as UNCG (6-17, 2-10) shot 52 percent from the field in the contest. Bailey Williams posted 15 points, five rebounds and five assists, and Shanese Harris collected 15 points and four steals. Janae' Stevenson finished with 12 points and eight rebounds.
UNCG blitzed Georgia Southern in the first half, shooting 58 percent from the field on its way to building a double-digit lead early. The Spartans finished the contest with 21 fast-break points.
"We have to take care of the little things; we didn't do it Saturday and we didn't do it for a majority of the game tonight," said Georgia Southern coach Chris Vozab. "When we commit to doing the little things for 40 minutes, we will have the kind of results we want."
UNCG led by 13 points early in the second half, but an 8-2 Eagle run brought Georgia Southern to within four points, following a pair of Knight free throws with 8:51 left in the contest.
The Spartans responded with an 11-2 spurt, capped by a conventional 3-point play by Mason, that pushed the lead back to 13 points with 6:05 to go. Three buckets came in transition, including the final layup by Mason.
The Eagles made one last push as McGowan scored five points in a 10-2 run that trimmed the lead to 66-61 with 3:16 left, but Mason answered with a jumper and UNCG kept the margin at six points or more the rest of the contest.
The Spartans jumped out to a 15-2 cushion to start the game as Georgia Southern made just one of its first 13 shots from the floor. Trailing 31-16, the Eagles capped the half with a 14-6 spurt to trim the margin to 37-30 at the break. Knight scored seven during the stretch, and the Eagles made 12 of their last 19 shots in the period.
Georgia Southern caps a three-game SoCon road trip at Davidson next Saturday, Feb. 15. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. in Belk Arena.
