STATESBORO, GA. – Georgia Southern Men's Basketball rolled to a 97-41 victory over Johnson University of Florida as the Eagles rolled to their second-straight win. Six Eagles scored in double figures with all 12 players in the game scoring points in the win. Georgia Southern has a big test on Monday night as FIU comes to Hanner Fieldhouse for a 7 p.m. matchup against the Conference USA foe.
"We played much better tonight," said Head Coach
Mark Byington. "We took care of the ball and made some great passes. Looking back at the Trinity game on Tuesday I thought we were maybe a little too unselfish. The guys did a better job tonight and played the game the right way. We did a great job on the boards, so now we've got to get ready for a big game against FIU on Monday."
For the second-straight game, the outcome wasn't in doubt as the Eagles rolled out to a 36-13 lead in the first 10 minutes of play.
Jelani Hewitt led all scorers for the third time this season with 19 points and four assists with two steals on 5-of-10 shooting from downtown.
Angel Matias dropped his fourth career double-double with 12 points and 16 rebounds with a season-high points and a career-best performance on the boards.
Coye Simmons had his first career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds in 19 minutes off the bench.
Freshman
Mike Hughes scored 12 points with 3-of-4 shooting from downtown with four assists and four steals.
Trent Wiedeman and
Curtis Diamond each added 10 points to round out the ledger of six Eagles in double figures.
Walk-on
Grayson Clark posted nine points and five rebounds in 10 minutes. Also notable was Statesboro native
Zach Altany who scored three points and opened his scoring account with the Eagles.
The Eagles entered the game averaging 17.0 turnovers per game and held that number to just six on Saturday as Georgia Southern dished 22 assists including a game-high six from freshman
Devonte Boykins off the bench.
Georgia Southern shot 56% from the field in the first half, but cooled in the second half as the front line players rested through much of the second half. The Eagles held Johnson to 29% shooting from the field and 25% from beyond the arc. The Eagles made 15-of-43 on the night from downtown, posting a 35% night from the bonusphere.
Next up for Georgia Southern is a Monday night game against Florida International in Hanner Fieldhouse. Next Saturday the Eagles are back at home for an afternoon matinee against South Carolina State. The Eagles face the Bulldogs after a women's game which starts at noon. Fans can get special $5 tickets for the game by showing their ticket for that day's football game against UL Monroe which starts at 6 p.m.
