QUICK HITS
Georgia Southern received an Associated Press vote this week as the 25th team on Manchester (Conn.) Journal Inquirer Assistant Sports Editor John Silver's Week 12 ballot... It marked the second time the Eagles received a vote (last Nov. 13, 2011) and first as an FBS member... Matt Dobson broke a Georgia Southern and Sun Belt Conference record for longest interception return with his 100-yard-plus return for a TD Saturday... The junior safety was honored as the Eagles' first Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week... Georgia Southern's seven-game win streak is the fifth-longest overall and second-longest conference win streak in the nation... With eight wins, the Eagles have recorded the most wins by a Sun Belt Conference team in its inaugural season in the league... Georgia Southern also owns the best-ever start in league play by a team in its inaugural season with a 7-0 mark... This is only the second time the Eagles have ever played a game in the state of Maryland, the first, the 2010 meeting between Georgia Southern and the Naval Academy... The Eagles' lone touchdown in that game was scored by then-slotback and now Dallas Cowboys' starting safety J.J. Wilcox... Georgia Southern is the second of three Sun Belt teams Navy has on its schedule this year and the only one to play at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium... This weekend's game is Georgia Southern's seventh road game... Navy's offensive line coach Chris Culton is a Georgia Southern graduate and was a student assistant coach after an injury ended his playing career... Middies' slotbacks coach Danny O'Rourke coached the Eagle defensive backs during Georgia Southern's 2000 FCS national championship season.

THE COACHES
Georgia Southern Head Coach Willie Fritz began his 22nd year as a head coach and his first as the leader of the Eagle Football program as it makes its FBS debut. The Shawnee Mission, Kansas, native has developed winning programs and cultivated success at each of his head coaching stops. He won two national championships at Blinn College, guided Central Missouri to 11 winning seasons and led Sam Houston State to back-to-back national championship appearances. He was selected as the Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year at the FCS level in 2012 and was recognized nationally in 2011 as the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Coach of the Year. His 97-47 mark in 13 seasons as the Mules' head coach ranked Fritz as the winningest coach in the program's 118-year history where he was the only coach to ever win seven or more games in eight consecutive seasons.

In his first six seasons as head coach at the Naval Academy, Ken Niumatalolo has led the Midshipmen to unprecedented accomplishments. He became the first coach in program history to guide Navy to a bowl game in each of his first three seasons, is just the second coach since World War II to lead Navy to a winning record in each of his first three seasons, and was the first Service Academy Coach to win the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy in his first two years as head coach. A 10-win season in 2009 tied for the most wins in a season in school history and Niumatalolo guided the Midshipmen to nine-win seasons in both 2010 and 2013. Navy won the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy for the ninth time in 2013 and Niumatalolo took the Midshipmen to their 10th bowl game in 11 years. A three-year letterwinner at quarterback at Hawai'i, he was part of the program's first bowl team in 1989 before beginning his coaching career at his alma mater.

SERIES RECORD VS. NAVY
Georgia Southern and Navy have met only once before, a September 11, 2010, contest at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. The Midshipmen, behind a touchdown from Heisman Trophy candidate Ricky Dobbs and two field goals, took a 13-7 win in the second game of the season. Slotback J.J. Wilcox caught a 17-yard touchdown pass from Jaybo Shaw for the Eagles' lone score in the third quarter.

BEST CONFERENCE START SINCE 2002
With a 7-0 mark in the Sun Belt Conference, Georgia Southern is off to its best start in league play since 2000 when the Eagles started 7-0 and finished with a 7-1 mark, a Southern Conference title and its sixth national championship. For Coach Willie Fritz, his Sam Houston State team went undefeated (7-0) and unchallenged in the Southland Conference in 2011 en route to the league's crown. To date, the Eagles have won a conference championship in every season in which they have won six or more league games.

DOBSON EARNS SUN BELT DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS
Junior safety Matt Dobson, who returned an interception 100+ yards for a touchdown in the Georgia Southern win over Texas State, was named the Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week. From Monticello, Fla., the two-year starter broke both the Georgia Southern and Sun Belt record for longest interception return with his 100-yard play, the previous records were 98 and 99 yards, respectively. Dobson, one of only three players to accomplish this feat in the FBS this season, becomes the first Eagle to be named a Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week.

The touchdown-saving interception in the Eagles' endzone, and subsequent points, made the difference in Saturday's win over the Bobcats, keeping the Eagles undefeated in the Sun Belt at 7-0 and with their seventh-straight win. Georgia Southern is tied for the league lead with 13 interceptions on the year and have the most touchdowns (2) and return yards (277) in the Sun Belt.

The 100+-yard interception return can be viewed at: tinyurl.com/Dobson100INTreturn.

For Dobson, it was his third interception of the year and second interception return for a touchdown this season. The total of two returns for TDs ties Laron Scott and Lavar Rainey for Georgia Southern's single-season and career-mark for interception returns for scores. His first was a 26-yard return for a score against Idaho. He recorded a game-high and career-best 12 tackles with nine solo tackles in the win over Texas State.
