Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Eagles Blank Mountaineers in Boone, 1-0

Thor’s 32nd minute penalty proves to be the difference

BOONE, N.C. – Georgia Southern Men's Soccer took all three points on the road Saturday night with a 1-0 victory at Appalachian State in the Eagles' first road test in the Sun Belt. Goalkeeper Jack Falle made nine saves while Thor Sveinbjornsson scored from the penalty spot to trump the rival Mountaineers. Next up is a Tuesday night trip to Chapel Hill against No. 9 North Carolina.

New Jersey Institute of Technology comes to Statesboro next Saturday for a crucial contest between the Eagles and Highlanders who are tied for second in the league standings with six points each.

"Really proud of the guys and their efforts tonight," said Head Coach Kevin Kennedy. "This is a very hard place to go and get a result, so I'm happy that we could get all three points in our first road test of Sun Belt play. App State is a very dangerous and well coached team. Now we've got to get recovered for a big game on Tuesday night at North Carolina."

The Eagles sprung out to a 1-0 lead just after the half hour mark as Thor scored his second goal of the season. The freshman from Iceland converted the team's second spot kick this season which was earned by Ethan LaPan. Captain Chase Park matriculated the ball downfield and slid a through ball to LaPan who was 1v1 with the Mountaineer goalkeeper. The senior was hauled down in the box to earn the whistle.

That goal would prove to be enough behind the stellar play of Falle in net for the Eagles. The Georgia Southern goalkeeper made nine saves against 17 total shots. It is the third time in his career and the second time this season that Falle has recorded nine saves as he posted his fourth shutout of the season.

The second half was a typical college soccer match as the Mountaineers laid siege to the Eagle goal and Georgia Southern looked to counter. The Eagles improve to 6-6-0 on the season and 2-1-0 in the Sun Belt. Appalachian State falls to 4-7-3 and 0-2-2 in the league.

The Eagles are back on the road Tuesday night with a trip to No. 9 North Carolina. Georgia Southern faces the Tar Heels starting at 7 p.m. from historic Fetzer Field. The match can be seen live on GoHeels.com.

Georgia Southern hosts the 2014 Sun Belt Men's Soccer Tournament on November 13-16 at Eagle Field in Statesboro. The winner of the league's tournament championship earns a bid to the NCAA Tournament.
