Georgia Southern has most student-athletes with four each on first and second teams
CLEVELAND, Ohio – Eight Eagles were named to Phil Steele Publications Midseason All-Sun Belt Teams as released today. The list included four first-team selections represented by senior center Manrey Saint-Amour, senior offensive tackle Garrett Frye, sophomore running back Matt Breida and senior linebacker Edwin Jackson. Sophomore quarterback Kevin Ellison and senior guard headed up the second-team picks for the Eagles with sophomore lineman Jay Ellison and senior safety Deion Stanley on the list for the defense.
Georgia Southern had the highest number of student-athletes on the combined first- and second teams.
The Eagle offensive line, with Daves, Frye and Saint-Amour honored on the Phil Steele Publication lists, has helped Georgia Southern record the nation's top rushing average, currently at 372 yards per game. Frye has started every game in the last three years with Saint-Amour with 30 starts. The experienced unit, including Daves, has pushed for three of the top rushers in the Sun Belt Conference and is ranked second nationally with only .57 sacks allowed per game this season.
Breida and Kevin Ellison are ranked first and second in rushing in the Sun Belt Conference with 15 rushing touchdowns combined. Both Breida and Ellison have recorded four games with 100-or more yards rushing while Ellison also has thrown for five touchdowns.
Georgia Southern's defense earned three places on the first and second teams with Eagles' tackles leader Jackson on the first team. The senior, who has three games with double-digit tackles, ranks seventh in the Sun Belt with 8.3 tackles per game. Stanley ranks in the league's top 10 in both interceptions with three and passes defended with five. The veteran is a four-year starter with 45 games in the Eagle backfield. Sophomore Jay Ellison shares the team lead for tackles for loss with four and has two sacks on the year.
The Eagles head to Atlanta for their first-ever meeting with in-state and Sun Belt rival Georgia State Saturday, October 25th. Kickoff is at 2 p.m.
