CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Taylor Hall collected 15 points, five rebounds, five assists and six steals, and Chattanooga used a late run to push past Georgia Southern for a 69-60 women's basketball victory Saturday night in McKenzie Arena.
MiMi DuBose led the Eagles (3-11, 1-2 SoCon) with 16 points and four assists, and a pair of free throws with 12:07 to play put the senior over the 1,000-point mark for her career.
"MiMi always keeps fighting," said Georgia Southern coach Chris Vozab. "She had a stretch where she was struggling with her shot, but she still found other ways to help her team. It's nice to see her feel good with her shot tonight and reach the milestone."
Sierra Kirkland scored a career-high 11 points to go along with seven rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals for GSU, while Anna Claire Knight notched nine points and five boards. Lacie Dowling chipped in eight points.
Alex Black posted 12 points and three assists for Chattanooga (11-3, 3-0 SoCon), and Ashlen Dewart tallied 11 points and five rebounds. Ka'Vonne Towns chipped in 11 points and three steals off the bench.
Trailing by 18 points early in the second half, Georgia Southern used a 25-7 run to tie the game 49-49 on a conventional 3-point play by Kirkland with 10:19 to go. Kirkland scored all 11 of her points during the stretch, while DuBose scored five and Knight added four.
Chattanooga answered by scoring the next 10 points and led 59-49 with 6:14 left. The Eagles worked the margin to six points on a Dowling triple from the wing with 3:03 remaining, but that was as close as they would get. Hall went 6-for-6 from the free-throw line to seal the win.
"I'm really proud of our kids because they kept fighting and stayed within our system," said Vozab. "We executed on both ends of the floor during the run we made in the second half, and you could see our kids gaining confidence. It's something we need to build on."
The Eagles took an early 10-5 lead on a Dowling triple from the wing, but the Lady Mocs responded with a 16-2 run to take control of the game. Dewart sparked the stretch with a jumper, while Megan Downes scored all six of her points and Towns netted five.
A DuBose layup off an offensive rebound brought the Eagles to within 11 points with 16 seconds left in the half, but Black drained a triple from the wing as the buzzer sounded to give Chattanooga a 38-24 lead at the break. Black and Hall hit consecutive jumpers to open the second half and put the Lady Mocs up 18 points, their largest of the contest.
The Eagles will cap their two-game SoCon road swing by facing preseason No. 2 pick Samford Monday at 7 p.m. (Eastern).
