BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Sherril McFarlane set the Georgia Southern record in the 800m Run Saturday with a 2:13.06 time in the race, good for third place among collegiate competitors and fourth place overall. McFarlane lowered the Eagles' program record, from the 2012 season, by 2.33 seconds. At one point today, she also had the meet record.
"This is a big thing for us, for that area of our program and we've been super productive and it shows we are going in the right direction," said Georgia Southern Track & Field Coach Marlo Mincey. "This was Sherril's first 800 for us and she was ready to get this first one out of the way. With these results, we can't wait to see what she does next."
Georgia Southern's 4X400m Relay Team of
Dana Edwards,
Kimberly Thomas, McFarlane and
Asha Stegall took a second off its previous best time this season with a 3:51.98. That time placed the Eagles in eighth-place among 38 teams. Six relay teams, including three SEC, two Conference USA and one ACC team finished ahead of Georgia Southern with Florida setting the Birmingham Crossplex facility record with its first-place finish.
Other notable performances for the Eagles included
Cherrelle King's personal best in the 800m Run and
Jordan Fordham's season-best effort in the 200m Dash.
"We have some catching up to do in some areas, but I'm happy that we're ahead of where we were last year at this same point in time in all the others," Mincey said.
The Eagles compete next weekend at the Niswonger Invitational at East Tennessee State.
