BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Will Evans shot a 7-under-par 137 in the first two rounds of the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate at Shoal Creek Golf and Country Club Monday. The senior is third in the individual standings and led the Georgia Southern golf team to a 4-under-par 572, which puts them in sixth place heading into Tuesday's final round.
Host UAB (-20) leads the team standings, and Ole Miss (-18) is second. Memphis (-10), Liberty (-8) and Florida (-5) round out the top five. Central Florida (-3) is seventh, a stroke behind the Eagles. The tournament features seven teams ranked in the top-50.
Evans picked up right where he left off last week as the senior fired a 68 with six birdies and one double bogey in the first round. The lone blemish came on the par-3 13th hole. He righted the ship with a birdie on the par-4 14th hole and added a birdie on 16 to make the turn at 1-under. He finished strong as well, birdieing his last two holes to finish 4-under.
Evans' second round began on hole 10 again, and was even through his first 13 holes. He finished strong again, birdieing three of his final five holes, including the last two, to card a 69.
Christian Humber, who tied for 12th last week, also stayed hot and shot 3-under-par in the first round. The senior birdied three of his first four holes and made the turn at 1-under-par. He was 4-under through 17 holes after consecutive birdies on seven and eight and bogeyed hole 9 to post a 69.
Humber struggled a bit on the first nine holes of his second round, making the turn at 3-over after collecting five bogies and two birdies. He birdied holes 1 and 3 and made five straight pars before finishing with a birdie to card a 73, giving him a 142 (-2), which is tied for 10th.
Scott Wolfes struggled a bit out of the gates in the first round but recovered nicely down the stretch. After a bogey on hole 4 put him 1-over, the junior birdied holes 6 and 8 to get to 1–under and birdied his final two holes of the round to finish with a 3-under 69. Two double bogeys on the first nine holes of his second round got things off to a bad start and he finished with a 79.
Classmate Charlie Martin carried the torch in the second round, firing a 68 after carding an 81 in the first round. Martin started the second round on hole 12 and was 1-over heading to the first tee. He got really hot from there, posting six birdies on the front nine and adding another one on hole 10 to finish 4-under.
Junior Kim Koivu struggled to an 81 in the first round but recovered to notch a 75 in the second round. Freshman Sam Towler played as an independent and carded a 77-75=152 in his first career collegiate tournament.
"Will had two great rounds and finished strong in both, Christian played solid all day as well and Charlie had a great comeback round in the afternoon after a rough start in the morning," said Georgia Southern coach Larry Mays. "We had four counting scores in the 60s today, which is good, but unfortunately, we had to count a high score as our fourth in each round."
Action concludes tomorrow at Shoal Creek, and the Eagles tee off at 8:06 a.m.
