Eagles play for the season’s first win in the Tar Heel State
STATESBORO, Ga. – After a disappointing opening weekend in the Hoosier State, Georgia Southern Women's Soccer is back on the road this weekend for a pair of games against NC State and High Point. The Eagles are in search of their first win under new head coach Brian Dunleavy and dropped a heartbreaker in the season opener to Indiana State in overtime last Friday.
Sydnie Van Curen got the goal against the Sycamores that put the Eagles on top, but a goal late in regulation, followed by an overtime match-winner sealed GSU's fate and handed the Eagles a 2-1 loss to ISU.
Last season the Eagles won the SoCon Tournament to take home the program's first major trophy. The Eagles won the tournament with a 5-4 penalty kicks win over Furman. The victory took the Eagles into the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history
Friday's game will be Georgia Southern's first-ever contest against NC State as the Eagles venture into North Carolina's capitol city for the 7 p.m. matchup. The Wolfpack are 2-0 on the season, taking a pair of 3-2 wins on the opening weekend. NCSU downed Navy in Annapolis before dispensing Longwood last Sunday. Two of State's six goals this season have come off the boot of Jackie Stengel.
High Point got off to a shaky start this season with a 7-1 loss in the season opener to Virginia Tech last Friday. The Panthers also dropped a 5-0 exhibition defeat to Western Carolina on August 16th. The Panthers will be in action on Friday night as well, traveling to take on William and Mary in the Tidewater of Virginia. The Eagles drew High Point 1-1 last year at Eagle Field and trail 0-1-2 in the all-time series.
After this weekend's games in North Carolina, the Eagles are back at the friendly confines next Friday for Alumni Night against Stetson. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Eagle Field.
