Golf Team Sits in Fourth after First Round of Samford Intercollegiate

HOOVER, Ala. – The Georgia Southern golf team is in fourth place after the first round of the Samford Intercollegiate at Hoover Country Club Monday.
The tournament was slated to play two rounds today, but frost delayed the start, leaving each team with about five holes left in round two.
The Eagles shot a 7-over-par 295 as a team and went into the second round eight strokes back of first-place Vanderbilt. Auburn (+3) is second and Furman is third (+4).
Charlie Martin led the way for the Eagles with a 73 after firing a 33 on his last nine. Scott Wolfes, Will Evans and Blake Olson carded 74s and are all tied for 27th. Hayden Anderson rounded out the group with a 76.
"We put together a fairly solid round in the morning," said GSU coach Larry Mays. "We gave away a few strokes at the end but hung in there for the most part. We played a little bit better in the afternoon. We need to finish the second round strong tomorrow morning, and then fight through whatever comes our way in the afternoon."
Second round action picks back up tomorrow morning, followed by the third and final round.
Following the tournament at Samford, the Eagles will take a week off before hosting the 34th annual Schenkel Invitational at Forest Heights Country Club March 15-17.
