Georgia Southern Golf Wins Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The Georgia Southern golf team rallied from a three-stroke deficit and posted a 293 in the third round to win the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate Tournament Tuesday afternoon.
It's the Eagles' third tournament victory of the 2012-13 campaign and the first time Georgia Southern has won three tournaments in a season since 2008-09.
The Eagles entered the day with four holes remaining from yesterday's second round, which was suspended due to darkness after the tournament got off to a late start because of frost. The team finished the second round with a 290, putting the Eagles in second place, three strokes back of Richmond and setting the stage for the third-round comeback.
Georgia Southern finished the tournament with a team score of 879 (+15), eight strokes ahead of second-place Francis Marion (+23), which hosted the tournament. Richmond and South Florida (+24) tied for third.
"We were able to put three solid rounds together in some iffy weather and really were able to hang in there," said Georgia Southern coach Larry Mays. "The encouraging thing for us is that we don't feel like we're playing our best golf yet. There are things we can clean up and room for improvement, and we will continue to work to get better."
Scott Wolfes finished the second round with a 71 and fired a 70 in the third round to tie for second with a 2-under-par 214, two shots back of Trey Valentine of South Forida. It's the fourth tournament this season in which the sophomore has placed first or second.
Hayden Anderson shot a 72 in round two and a 73 for the final 18 to take fifth with an even-par 216. The junior now has three top-10 finishes and four top-20 outings this season.
Charlie Martin finished his second round with a 71 and posted a 75 in the third round to tie for 11th, his fourth top-15 finish. Blake Olson finished the tournament strong, posting a 76 in the second round and a 75 in the final round. Will Evans carded a 158 in the final two rounds.
The tournament field contained four other Southern Conference teams in Davidson (6th, +35), Elon (T13, +61), Samford (5th, +33) and Western Carolina (T13, +61). Western Carolina's J.T. Poston tied Wolfes for second in the individual standings.
The Eagles will take a week off before competing at the Samford Intercollegiate March 4-5.
