STATESBORO, Ga. – The Georgia Southern golf team continues its spring season at the eighth annual Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate Tournament, Monday and Tuesday on Hilton Head Island.
Hosted by Francis Marion, the tournament will consist of 36 holes Monday and 18 holes Tuesday at the Wexford Plantation course, which underwent extensive renovations, overseen by the Arnold Palmer Design Company in 2011, and measures 6,828 yards and with a par-72 layout. Both days will begin with shotgun starts at 8:30 a.m.
Joining the Eagles in the field is defending team champion Georgia State along with Campbell, UConn, Davidson, Dayton, DePaul, Elon, Ohio, Presbyterian, Radford, Richmond, Samford, USC Aiken, South Florida, Western Carolina and William & Mary.
The Eagles opened the spring campaign at the SunTrust Gator Invitational last weekend and tied for seventh in a 14-team field that featured seven top-50 teams. The players who did not participate in that tournament played in an individual tournament at Savannah Quarters Golf Course Monday and Tuesday.
"Last weekend, we got to see all 10 players play in a tournament atmosphere, and that gave us a good base on where we need to go with this week's squad," said Georgia Southern coach Larry Mays. "We're in the time of the season where we just want the kids competing so we did some drills where we had all 10 guys competing against each other head-to-head this week."
The same five players who made up the Eagles' squad at the SunTrust Gator Invitational - Scott Wolfes, Charlie Martin, Hayden Anderson and Blake Olson - will tee it up at the Wexford.
Wolfes, currently ranked 31st in the country by Golf Week, is coming off a second-place outing last weekend, his fourth top-5 and fifth top-10 finish of the season.
Martin is averaging 73.67 strokes and has three top-15 finishes, while Anderson owns a 73.71 scoring average with three top-20 outings. Evans averages 74.33 strokes and has three top-20 finishes.
Olson (right) will compete in his third tournament of the season looking to put three quality rounds together. The senior combined for a 146 in the first and third rounds last weekend but struggled in the second round and shot 229 for the tournament.
Following the weekend, the Eagles will take a week off before competing at the Samford Intercollegiate March 4-5.
