GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Scott Wolfes birdied three holes on his back nine to shoot an even-par 70 and place second at the SunTrust Gator Invitational at the Mark Bostick Golf Course on the campus of the University of Florida Saturday afternoon.
The Georgia Southern golf team fired a 284 to tie for seventh with Liberty (+21). The Eagles were one stroke behind sixth-place Arkansas and two strokes behind fifth-place Central Florida. Florida State won the tournament at 8-under, and North Florida (+7) placed second. South Alabama (+10) was third followed by Florida (+11) in fifth.
“It was a solid day for the Eagles as we had all five guys in the ballgame most of the round,” said Georgia Southern coach Larry Mays. “The field was pretty similar and maybe even a little bit better than an NCAA regional field, where teams must finish in the top-5 to move onto nationals. We missed that by two strokes.”
Wolfes was 4-under-par for the tournament to record his fourth top-5 finish of the season. The sophomore started on hole 10 today and played his first nine at 2-over. He birdied three of the first seven holes after the turn and bogeyed hole 8 to shoot 70.
Will Evans tied for 20th after posting an even-par 70 today. The junior logged two bogeys on his first nine holes and had two birdies on his second to finish the tournament at 4-over and record his third top-20 finish of the season.
After playing his first nine at 3-over, Charlie Martin got on a roll after the turn, and strung together three straight birdies to finish his round with a 70.
“Scott finished really strong on his back nine, and Will and Charlie finished strong for good rounds today,” said Mays.
Hayden Anderson played his first nine even but struggled on his back nine to post a 75. Blake Olson put together a solid round with bogeys on four holes and pars on the other 14 to shoot a 74. Henry Mabbett, who played as an individual this week, shot a 75.
The four Eagles who did not compete in the SunTrust Gator Invitational - Matt Mierzejewski, Christian Humber, Caleb Morris and Drew Guffey - will play in the Savannah Quarters Individual, co-hosted by Georgia Southern, Monday and Tuesday.
The tournament has a field of 45 players from Alabama, Florida State, Chattanooga, North Florida, Mercer, Liberty and South Carolina Beaufort in addition to Georgia Southern competing as individuals.
