SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Georgia Southern's Jamie DeRatt and Kym Coley were named first-team All-Southern Conference while Katalin Minnerly earned second-team honors, the league office announced today.
The teams and individual awards were voted on by the league's 11 head coaches, who were not allowed to vote for themselves or their own players.
DeRatt ranks second in the league in kills (3.66 per set), earned SoCon Offensive Player of the Week honors twice and was named the league's Offensive Player of the Month in September. The junior outside hitter reached double figures in kills in 24 matches and recorded 17 double-doubles (kills and digs). She tallied 20-plus kills three times and had career highs of 23 kills and 19 digs in the Eagles' home win over Elon Sept. 27. DeRatt was named MVP of the Jaguar Invitational in September, one of four in-season tournaments the Eagles won this season.
Coley ranks second in the league in hitting percentage (.384) and was named the SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week Sept. 4. The junior middle averaged 2.61 kills and 0.71 blocks a set. She reached double figures in kills in 12 matches, posting a season-high 16 against Furman Oct. 4. Coley was named all-tournament at the Jaguar Invitational and the Magnolia Invitational.
Minnerly leads the league in assists (11.28 per set) and averaged 2.55 digs a set while directing an offense that is hitting .234 on the season. The sophomore setter recorded 15 double-doubles (assists and digs) and topped the 50-assist mark in a match six times with career highs of 52 against Elon Sept. 27 and Appalachian State Oct. 18. She was named to the all-tournament team at the Jaguar Invitational.
Samford's Michaela Reesor was selected by the coaches as the SoCon Player of the Year, while teammate Chelsi Carter was named Libero of the Year. Furman took the other two awards, with Ashton Gregory earning Freshman of the Year honors and Michelle Young winning the Coach of the Year award.
Winners of the SoCon regular-season title in each of the last two seasons, Georgia Southern heads to this weekend's SoCon Tournament as the top seed. The Eagles will take on eighth-seeded Elon at 12:30 p.m. Friday in Timmons Arena in Greenville, S.C. The winner of the tournament gets the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
