Eagles finish the season at 9-10-0 on the year
GREENVILLE, S.C. – Georgia Southern's 2013 Men's Soccer season came to a wet end as the Eagles dropped a 5-1 result to Elon in the SoCon Semifinals. The No. 2 seeded Phoenix scored early and often, putting up four goals in the first half. Witt Carlisle got a late goal, but it was too little too late for the sixth seeded Eagles.
"Credit to Elon, they made things difficult for us early," said Head Coach Kevin Kennedy. "We made some mistakes and they capitalized quickly and put us down two goals. We tried to push back, but it wasn't our night tonight."
Georgia Southern closes the season at 9-10-0 while Elon improves to 14-4-2 on the year and advances to the SoCon Tournament Championship Game.
Elon put offensive pressure on the Eagles from the opening whistle. That pressure nearly gave the Phoenix a 1-0 in the ninth minute, but the assistant referee flagged the play offsides.
Jason Waterman, however, did get the breakthrough by scoring his 10th goal of the season in the 13th minute. A corner kick was volleyed in as Elon scored on its seventh shot of the evening.
Matt Westcoe doubled the advantage for Elon in the 15th minute as he scored his fifth goal of the season to go 2-0 up.
Elon added two more goals before the end of the first half. The third of the day came in the 37th minute with the fourth coming on 41 minutes.
The Phoenix added their fifth with a Daniel Lovitz penalty kick in the 49th minute.
Georgia Southern got on the scoreboard in the 85th minute as Witt Carlisle posted 20th and final collegiate goal. It was his eighth of the season and came off an assist by Rocco Bagley.
Neal Bates made eight saves on the night and raised his season total to 119, good for second place on the single-season list at Georgia Southern and four shy of Mike Burrell's 1997 school record. He also completes his career with 205 career saves, good for seventh place on the GSU career chart.
