GEORGIA SOUTHERN-FURMAN SERIES
Two schools located less than 200 miles apart traveled a combined 5,600 miles one way for their storied first meeting in the 1985 NCAA FCS (then-Division I-AA) national championship game. The final seconds of that contest sealed Georgia Southern's 22-point comeback as Eagle quarterback Tracy Ham threw a bullet of a pass to freshman Frankie Johnson in the endzone for the improbable 44-42 win. Georgia Southern and Furman have met 24 previous times with the Eagles holding a 16-8 series lead. The Eagles have won the last three games and are 8-3 at Paulson Stadium against the Paladins.
ONE OF THE EARLIEST MEETINGS
Only three other games in the Georgia Southern-Furman series history have been played earlier in the season than this Nov. 2nd game -- 9-29-92 (GS win 21-0), 10-15-11 (GS win 50-20) and 10-20-12 (GS win 38-17). Eighteen games have been played in November, three in December (1985 title game, 1988 title game, 2001 semifinal game) and one in September.
TOSSING IT AROUND
Tracy Ham's 419 passing yards from the 1985 national championship tilt against the Paladins still stands as a Georgia Southern single-game record. Lee Chapple's 39 completions on 56 attempts, also both single-game records, were recorded in the 2008 win at Furman.
SCORING STREAK
Despite only playing a handful of snaps Saturday, Jerick McKinnon extended his touchdown scoring streak to five games with a first-quarter nine-yard TD run.
IN THEIR DEFENSE
Junior safety Deion Stanley remains in the top spot in the SoCon for interceptions with three for 31 return yards. Stanley and Lavelle Westbrooks are tied for sixth in the league in passes defended with six each.
IN HONOR OF SMITH & INMAN
The Eagle Football Alumni Association recently awarded two new scholarships in addition to its annual Erk Russell scholarship. The Tom "Doc" Smith and Roger Inman scholarships were presented to graduate student athletic trainer Erik Sanders and student equipment manager Jaycob Raglund, respectively.
THE COACHES
A 2012 finalist and 2013 candidate for Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year honors, Jeff Monken is in his fourth year as head coach of the Georgia Southern Football program with a 35-15 record for a 70.0 winning percentage. Monken is one of only two coaches in Eagle Football history, the other his mentor Paul Johnson, to record 10 or more wins in each of the first three years of his tenure. With 24 years of coaching experience, including five years as an assistant coach at Georgia Southern during one of its most successful periods, Monken is prepared to navigate the present and the future for this Eagle Football program.
Furman alum and longtime assistant coach, Bruce Fowler is in his third year as head coach, and returned to his alma mater after spending nine years at Vanderbilt under former Furman Coach Bobby Johnson. A defensive back for the Paladins from 1977-80, and beginning his coaching career as a graduate assistant in 1984, Fowler has served 24 of his 33 seasons in Greenville as a player, assistant coach or head coach.
ON THE SIDELINES
Coach Jeff Monken and Coach Bruce Fowler were both assistants coaches for their current respective teams with Monken on Paul Johnson's Eagle staff (1997-2001) and Fowler on the sidelines for Jimmy Satterfield (1986-1998) and defensive coordinator for Bobby Johnson (1999-2001) before departing for Vanderbilt (2002-10) with Johnson. Fowler began his coaching career as a graduate assistant for the Paladins under Dick Sheridan in 1984.
In addition to seven meetings, six as assistants at Georgia Southern and two as head coaches, Monken and Fowler were were on the sidelines for Navy and Vanderbilt, respectively, for two meetings (2003, 2004) and for a 2009 game between Georgia Tech and the Commodores.

LAST TIME OUT AGAINST THE PALADINS
Three-straight touchdowns in the second half helped propel the Eagles to a 38-17 win in Greenville in 2012 after Furman held a 10-9 lead late in the third quarter. Jerick McKinnon ran for a one-yard touchdown for Georgia Southern's first touchdown and then threw his longest career pass, a touchdown to Zach Walker, to put the Eagles up 17-10. Dominique Swope scored both of his touchdowns in the fourth quarter with rushing touchdowns from both Johnathan Bryant and William Banks. It was the only game of 2012 that did not see an Eagle running back with at least 100 yards rushing, but McKinnon connected with five different receivers for 119 yards. Linebacker John Stevenson tied his career high with 12 tackles, 10 in the first half.
