Junior netminder earns player of the week honors for her debut weekend
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Georgia Southern goalkeeper Molly Williams has been named the Southern Conference women's soccer player of the week for all competition Sept. 23-29.
Williams, a junior who joined the team as an emergency walk-on a few days before the Eagles' season opener, was pressed into service over the weekend due to injuries to the other three keepers on the roster. The Grayson, Ga., native responded to her first career action admirably, going 1-0-1 with 17 saves and a 0.45 goals against average and a shutout on the week.
In her collegiate debut, Williams turned away 13 shots – fourth-most in a single game in school history – to blank Samford over 110 minutes as the teams played to a scoreless draw. The Bulldogs entered the match receiving votes in the NSCAA Continental Tire Top 25 and have beaten Tennessee, Auburn and Vanderbilt this season.
Williams followed up the shutout with her first career win, allowing one goal in a 2-1 win over Chattanooga on Sunday. She made another four saves on the day.
After the opening weekend of SoCon play, the Eagles (2-5-2) share the league lead with four points (1-0-1). GSU returns to action Friday when it hosts Appalachian State (3-4-2, 0-0-2 SoCon) at 7 p.m.
