SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Junior goalkeeper Katie Merson picked up SoCon Women’s Soccer Player of the Week honors on Tuesday morning. The Eagle netminder did not allow a goal while making 10 combined saves in two matches last weekend against North Florida and Jacksonville.
Merson is the first Eagle to pick up the SoCon weekly award since Ashley Toussaint earned the honor on October 3rd, 2006.
The Eagle netminder made five saves on Friday afternoon as the Eagles picked up their third win of the year over North Florida against 11 total shots by the Ospreys. On Sunday, Merson helped keep the Eagles’ unbeaten start alive with a 0-0 draw against Jacksonville. She faced 15 shots in the 110 minute match, making five saves for her fourth shutout of the season in five total outings.
On Wednesday, the Eagles are back at home for a mid-week tie with South Carolina State. The match starts at 4 p.m. from Eagle Field.
Following the match, a free kids clinic will be conducted by the Eagle players and coaches. Gus will be on hand to meet all the Little Eagles before the match and it is Jersey Day: all fans are invited to wear their favorite soccer jersey to the match.

Brooke Contreras leads the squad with three goals. As a team, SCSU has 15 goals scored by 10 different players and opened the year with an 8-0 win over Alabama A&M.
