Volleyball Opens Southern Conference Action This Weekend

STATESBORO, Ga. – The Georgia Southern volleyball team opens its 16-match Southern Conference schedule with a pair of road matches at Wofford and Furman this weekend.
The Eagles (9-5) meet the Terriers Friday at 6 p.m. before taking on Furman at 4 p.m. Saturday.
Georgia Southern is coming off a 3-1 weekend in the SpringHill Suites Invitational at Hanner Fieldhouse last weekend. Three of the Eagles' losses this year have come to Georgia, Auburn and Wisconsin, and three have come in five-set matches, including two in the Lobo Invitational in New Mexico.
The Eagles rank 34th in the nation in digs, averaging 17.86 per set as a team. Reigning SoCon Freshman of the Week Alexandra Beecher averages 4.73 digs, which ranks fourth in the SoCon. Kate Van Dyke ranks second in the league and 34th in the nation in assists with an 11.13 average.
Wofford (8-3) is on a five-match win streak and ranks third in the league in hitting percentage at .232. Wendy Burnett is hitting .315 and averaging 2.41 kills per set, and Rachel Woodlee hits .260 with a 2.61 kills per set average.
Furman (10-3) had an eight-match win streak end at Texas Tech Sept. 8, and the Paladins are coming off a 3-0 win over Presbyterian Sept. 12. Furman leads the league in team hitting percentage (.279), kills (14.51/set) and assists (13.77/set). Caroline Adams leads the league in hitting percentage at .391, and Christina Dorismond ranks second at .365.
The Eagles play their first home league matches against The Citadel Sept. 28, and College of Charleston Sept. 29.
