NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Charlie Martin shot a 68 (3-under), and Scott Wolfes fired a 69 (2-under) to lead the Georgia Southern golf team in the first round of the Mason Rudolph Championship Friday at the Legends Course.
The Eagles are tied for fifth with Georgia State after shooting a first-round total of 289. Oklahoma leads the tournament, followed by Ole Miss and College of Charleston. Vanderbilt is fourth.
Martin birdied five of the first nine holes to finish the front nine at minus-4. The sophomore birdied 14 and 16 but bogeyed 15 to finish the day 3-under.
Wolfes birdied the first hole but double bogeyed the par-3 fifth hole. The sophomore notched birdies on seven and eight to go in at 1-under par. He posted pars on the first four holes of the back nine before getting a birdie on 14. He birdied the par-3 16th hole to finish at 2-under.
"We had two guys put up great rounds, and overall, we played pretty well," said Georgia Southern coach Larry Mays. "We got off to a pretty good start then struggled a little bit in the middle of the round. We were making a nice little run and then dropped a few shots coming down the stretch. We need to clean up our iron play a little bit tomorrow if we want to move up the board, and we're still looking for a round where we put four solid scores up."
Caleb Morris shot a 75, and Henry Rabbet posted a 77. Hayden Anderson finished the day with a 78, and Christian Humber, who is playing as an individual, shot a 72 and is tied for 30th.
Action at the Mason Rudolph Championship continues tomorrow.
