KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Georgia Southern sophomore golfer Scott Wolfes carded a 5-under par 67 to move into first place after two rounds of the Invitational at Kiawah at the Ocean Course.
Wolfes, who started the day tied for fifth, has a three-stroke lead over Florida's Tyler McCumber and a four-stroke advantage over Gator TJ Vogel. Wolfes played a bogey-free round and had four birdies on the front nine. He also birdied hole 11 to finish the back nine 1-under. He's 4-under for the tournament on the course that hosted the PGA Championship just over a month ago.
"Scott played an unbelievable round of golf," said Georgia Southern coach Larry Mays. "To shoot a bogey-free round of 67 on that golf course is pretty impressive. He has given himself a chance to win the tournament, and hopefully, he can play well tomorrow."
The Eagles fell a few spots into a tie for 10th in the team standings with Texas State. Florida leads the tournament with a 577, followed by Houston (597) and College of Charleston (600).
Caleb Morris shot a 79 and struggled on the back nine, and Will Evans posted an 80. Charlie Martin had trouble on the last three holes and finished with an 82. Blake Olson finished with an 86. Henry Mabbett, who is playing as an individual, carded a 79 after posting a 79 yesterday.
"We made a few too many mistakes and couldn't avoid the big numbers like we needed to," said Mays. "We'll make some more adjustments and try to finish strong tomorrow."
Tomorrow's final round starts at 7:30 a.m., and Wolfes will tee off at 8:20 a.m.
