Statesboro, Ga. - The Georgia Southern golf team will head to Daniel Island, S.C. to defend their crown as Southern Conference champions April 15-17. The tournament will be played at the Ralston Creek Course for the first time, after previously being held in Florence, S.C.
Georgia Southern will be looking for its fourth SoCon tournament title. Head Coach Larry Mays and the Eagles won the championship last season (2011), and also won in 2003 and 2006. Lewis Gruber returns as a senior after leading Georgia Southern last year, shooting eight-under par and a second-place finish.
The Eagles head into the Championship tournament ranked No. 84, according to Golfstat. The ranking is second only to Chattanooga, who comes in ranked NO. 34.
The Eagles will send a team of junior Blake Olson (Pensacola, Fla.), freshman Scott Wolfes (St. Simons Island, Ga.), senior Lewis Gruber (Tallahassee, Fla.), sophomore Hayden Anderson (Knoxville, Tenn.) and freshman Zach Hartman (St. Simons Island, Ga.). Gruber and Anderson are the only two returning members of the tournament team from last season.
The winner of the championship will receive the SoCon's automatic bid to the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship. The individual winner will also qualify for the NCAA Championship individually if their team does no go to regionals.
The tournament will tee off at 8 a.m. Sunday morning. Admission to the tournament is free, and fans can follow the action live at http://golfstatresults.com/public/index.cfm?tournament_id=2747.
