STATESBORO, Ga. – Meredith Paskert recorded 19 kills and eight digs to lead Georgia Southern to a 3-1 (125-18, 24-26, 25-20, 25-15) Southern Conference volleyball victory over Davidson Monday night in Hanner Fieldhouse, extending the Eagles' winning streak to 10 matches.
Moriah Bellissimo collected 16 kills, 17 digs and a pair of blocks for the Eagles (22-6, 13-1 SoCon), and Kym Coley finished with 12 kills and three blocks. Kate Van Dyke was credited with 47 assists, 22 digs and two blocks, and Alexandra Beecher registered 18 digs.
Megan Chamberlin led the Wildcats (10-14, 6-8 SoCon) with 13 kills, and Caroline Brown posted 10 kills and 22 digs. Molly Crenshaw added 15 digs, and Ariel Ley finished with 37 assists.
With the match tied 1-1, the Eagles broke a 15-15 tie in the third set with a 4-1 run, thanks to two kills by Bellissimo, to open a slim 19-16 cushion. Davidson trimmed the lead to 22-20, but Jamie DeRatt, Van Dyke and Coley posted three straight kills to end the set and give GSU a 2-1 lead in the match.
The Eagles never trailed in the fourth set and jumped out to an early 6-2 lead on a Crysten Curry kill. A Chamberlin kill closed the gap to 10-9, but DeRatt stopped the rally with a kill and served for three straight points to push the margin back to five. A kill by Ley made the score 19-14, but GSU finished the frame with a 6-1 run, keyed by three Bellissimo kills, to end the match.
The Eagles overcame a 13-7 deficit in the first set by using an 8-2 spurt, aided by two Paskert kills, to tie the score at 15-15. Leading 20-17, DeRatt's kill sparked a 5-1 run to give the Eagles the set and a 1-0 lead in the match.
The Wildcats fought off three set points to win the second game. Trailing 24-21, Shannon McPherson, Taylor Pisel and Brown posted three straight kills to tie the score. The Wildcats went on to make it a 5-0 run as the Eagles had consecutive errors to end the set, and Davidson tied the match.
Georgia Southern finishes off the regular season with two SoCon South Division matches this weekend. The Eagles host Furman Friday at 6 p.m. and take on Wofford Saturday at 7 p.m.
