KAUAI, Hawaii – Matt Mierzejewski and Will Evans each shot a 3-under par 69 in the opening round of the Warrior Wave Invitational at Makai Golf Club Monday, and the Georgia Southern golf team posted a 283 and is leading the tournament after the first day.
The Eagles are one shot ahead of NC State and three ahead of East Tennessee State and UC Irvine. Baylor rounds out the top-5, four shots back of GSU.
Hayden Anderson finished with a 2-under 70, while Scott Wolfes shot a 75 and Charlie Martin shot a 76. Mierzejewski (right) and Evans are tied for fourth in the individual standings, while Anderson is tied for ninth.
Mierzejewski rolled in three birdies on the front nine and added another on hole 12 to move to 4-under par. He bogeyed 16 to end the clean round but finished with his best round as an Eagle.
After a bogey on hole three, Evans birdied four of the next five holes to finish the front nine at 3-under. He played the back nine even, with two bogeys and two birdies, getting a birdie on 18 to end the round.
Anderson was even par through the front nine and birdied three of the first four holes on the back to move to 3-under. He bogeyed 16 to finish with a 70.
"We had a great start to the tournament today, and we did a good job of playing smart, yet aggressive and managing our games well," said GSU coach Larry Mays. "We have to go out tomorrow and do more of the same."
Both Wolfes and Martin had one big hiccup in their rounds as both triple bogeyed hole 4. Wolfes capped his round with birdies on 15 and 18, while Martin was 1-over on the back nine.
The three-round tournament continues tomorrow.
