STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Southern golf coach Larry Mays announced today that Sam Towler has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Eagles, beginning in the 2013-14 season.
Towler will join the Georgia Southern golf program after compiling an impressive junior resume. During 2012, he posted third-place finishes in the Hertfordshire U18 Boys Championship and the England S.E. U18 Championship. He had many victories in the 2012 season, winning the Peter Langford Trophy (-1), Neil Paton Trophy (-3), Letchworth Hammond Cup (-3) and the Hertfordshire U18 Challenge Trophy, which is an award given to the best performing U18 over 16 rounds of national events.
Towler has been chosen to represent many squads in England, including the U16 S.E. England squad from 2009-2012. He was captain of the Herts County U18 squad, where he was unbeaten in all matches and led the team to victory. He also represented the Woburn Golf Club Men's Scratch Team all year, going unbeaten again and winning the league championship with the team.
As a 14-year-old, Towler won the prestigious Under-16 Faldo Series event at Walton Heath. He then qualified for the Faldo Series final in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
He will join the Eagles with an equally impressive academic resume as he carries a 4.0 grade point average at Bedford Modern School in Bedford, England.
"We are very excited about adding Sam to our program" said Mays. "Sam is a great young man and has all the attributes that will make him a very successful college golfer. With his athletic and academic background, he will exemplify what it means to be a student-athlete at Georgia Southern. Both Coach (Carter) Collins and I are excited about what he will bring to the program."
Georgia Southern recently completed a solid fall campaign as the team won back-to-back tournaments, an accomplishment not seen in the program since 1982. The next event for the Eagles is the SunTrust Gator Invitational at the University of Florida in February.
