GREENSBORO, N.C. – Georgia Southern Women’s Soccer closed the road portion of the 2012 regular season on Sunday afternoon with a 1-0 loss at UNCG. The Spartans netted the game-winning goal in the 54th minute.
“Soccer is a cruel game at times. We feel like we fought hard and played on par with UNCG today, but again we come away frustrated,” said head coach Lindsey Vanderspiegel. “We will regroup and be prepared for next weekend’s home matches.”
The Eagle defense played strong in the opening half with goalkeeper Katie Merson turning away two Spartan shots in the first 45 minutes. UNCG out-shot GSU by a 4-2 margin in the opening period.
Nine minutes into the second half, UNCG took the 1-0 lead off a goal from Katherine Rodriguez, her first of the year. A pair of quick passes in the box got the ball to the striker in position for the goal.
Georgia Southern’s comeback was dealt a blow in the 76th minute when Carlee Storey was red-carded, forcing the Eagles to play the final 14 minutes with just 10 players.
GSU closes the 2012 regular season and its drive for a spot in the SoCon Tournament with three home games. The Eagles face Furman on Friday night at 7 p.m. and close the weekend with a match against Wofford on Sunday at 2 p.m. The 2012 regular season finale is on Wednesday, October 24th at 7 p.m. versus Davidson.
