STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern Volleyball team (3-5) continues a stretch of three-straight tournaments at the 2011 Carolina Classic in Chapel Hill, N.C. The Eagles look to rebound from a winless trip to the Varney's Invitational last weekend. The two-day invitational starts Friday at 4:30 p.m.
GSU will face another group of quality opponents at the Carolina Classic including Arizona State, North Carolina and San Diego. The Sun Devils will be the first team the Eagles face at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. Arizona State is off to a 3-3 mark in the 2011 campaign.
The Classic wraps up with Saturday matches against North Carolina at noon and San Diego at 5:30 p.m. The Tar Heels have just one loss on their record. The Toreros are a perfect 6-0 and checked in at number 19 in the latest poll.
Georgia Southern is posting 13.4 kills per set and averages 12.2 assists, both better than their opponents; however, their opponents have committed fewer serve reception errors and have more blocks than the Eagles on the young season.
Setting up the offense is veteran junior, Kate Van Dyke (Shawnee, Kan.). Van Dyke ranks third in the Southern Conference with 10.34 assists per set and has tallied 300 assists this year. The primary recipient of those assists is senior Bethany Sanford (Avondale, Ariz.). Sanford also ranks third in the league and averages 3.79 kills per set.
