Volleyball Falls to Idaho in Varney's Finale

STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern Volleyball team (3-5) fell to Idaho (2-4) 3-0 in the finale of the Varney's Invational hosted by Kansas State Saturday, September 3rd. Bethany Sanford (Avondale, Ariz.) recorded 17 kills, the second most by her this season, but the Eagles fell 25-20, 25-19, 25-21 in a close three-set loss.
Georgia Southern held the Vandals to a .200 hitting percentage but committed 27 attack errors of their own. Kate Van Dyke (Shawnee, Kan.), Moriah Bellissimo (Blackstone, Va.) and Lauren LaRocque (Frisco, Texas) all tallied 10 or more digs with the libero LaRocque leading the way with 12. Van Dyke recorded 11 more digs and led the team in assists with 28.
Allison Walker and Alicia Milo powered Idaho to the win with 11 and 10 kills respectively. Alex Sele posted a team best .333 attack percentage and recorded eight kills on 18 attempts. The Vandals committed 16 errors but posted nine team blocks to help make up the difference.
Georgia Southern returns to the court next weekend at the 2011 Carolina Classic. The Eagles will face three teams in Arizona State, North Carolina and San Diego in the two-team tournament.
