Freshmen Scott Wolfes (St. Simons Island, Ga.) and Charlie Martin (LaGrange, Ga.) led the way for the Eagles, both posting a 1-under 215 in their first collegiate competition to finish in a tie for 12th place. Senior Lewis Gruber (Tallahassee, Fla.) shot 3-under 69 in round 2 for the lowest round by an Eagle and finished in a tie for 50th place (78-69-76=223).
The Eagles found themselves in 13th place after shooting 300 (+12) in round one, but improved their overall score by eighteen strokes in the second round, shooting 282 (-6) to jump into a tie for 7th place. Georgia Southern tried to carry their momentum into Monday, but dropped eight strokes in the final three holes to come in at 291 (+3) for the round and a final score of 856 (-8) at the par-72, 7,062 yard course.
"I was really proud of how our guys regrouped in the second round," said Head Coach Larry Mays. "We didn't finish as well as we could have today, but I'm encouraged by how we fought back after a rough first round," said Mays.
Coach Mays was also pleased with the performance of the Eagle freshmen. "What Charlie and Scott were able to do in their first collegiate tournament was very impressive," said Mays. "Now we have to regroup and get ready for the next one."
The Eagles will have some time to prepare before hitting the links September 23-25 at the Mason Rudolph Championship in Nashville, Tennessee.
