SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The accolades keep coming in for Georgia Southern Softball freshman pitcher Allie Miles, (Dacula, Ga.) who was named Southern Conference Freshman of the Year on Monday (May 9th). Two other Eagles, Marie Fogle (Rincon, Ga.) and Megen Smith, (Springfield, Ga.) picked up All-Conference honors as a result of a vote of the league's head coaches.
Miles, in addition to being named SoCon Freshman of the Year, also earned second team All-SoCon honors and a spot on the All-Freshman team. The league strikeout leader with 153, Miles posted a 14-8 record including a league-best 9-2 mark in SoCon games. She recorded 75 of her strikeouts in conference games and fanned 15 against UNCG on April 22nd. On the season, she tossed a two one-hitters and two two-hitters en route to four shutouts. Miles, a three-time SoCon Pitcher of the Week, was named the Pitcher of the Month for April. She is the sixth Eagle to receive the award all-time
Fogle's hot season at the plate earned her a first-team All-SoCon selection in the outfield. The junior centerfielder enters the postseason leading the Eagles in hitting with a .354 batting average and a .669 slugging percentage for fourth in the league. Fogle is second in the SoCon in home runs with 14 and has 10 doubles. A first-team selection in 2009, and All-Freshman team honoree. Fogle was named SoCon Player of the Month for March and the SoCon Player of the Week twice this season.
Smith's strong senior season allowed the Eagle utility player to pick up her fourth career All-SoCon honor, making her the first Eagle to do so. In 2011, she was selected as a second team utility player, hitting .275 with eight home runs. Smith played at five different positions for the Eagles in 2011 including 22 games in the pitching circle. Against Elon (April 9th), she pitched six and a third innings of shutout ball to earn a victory.
