AUGUSTA, Ga. - The Georgia Southern Golf team shaved 18 strokes off its opening-round total with a second-round 292 at the 33rd Insperity Augusta State Invitational. The Eagles, paced by Florian Sander's (Bregenz, Austria) two-round 146 (+2), go into the final round in 13th place. Oklahoma State leads the tournament, posting a 20-under 556 at the par-72, 7,029-yard Forest Hills Golf Club. The Cowboys also lead the individual standings as Kevin Tway leads the field by four strokes at 11-under (64-69=133) for the tournament.
Freshman Will Evans (McDonough, Ga.) provided a Georgia Southern highlight in the tournament's second round on the par-5 ninth. Evans, who carded three birdies in the second round, double-eagled the 540-yard ninth hole from 242 yards away with a hybrid to record a 3-over 75. Evans knocked four strokes off his first round to head into the final round 10-over (79-75=154).
Evans would not be the only Eagle to use the second round to shave strokes off the tournament total. Every player on the Georgia Southern team signed for a lower round in the afternoon session. Sander led the charge, dropping all but one of his four birdies on the back nine to finish the second round at 1-under 71 and move in a tie for 25th place.
Logan Blondell (Lakeland, Fla.) made the biggest jump in the standings, moving up 30 spots at the conclusion of day one. Blondell began Saturday's final round with two birdies and repeated the process two holes later on the 17th and 18th hole. Blondell battled the rest of the day, but a birdie on the par-5 ninth helped the senior finish the round at 1-under 71 and in a 34th-place tie (77-71=148).
Matt Deal (Statesboro, Ga.) finished his second round 3-over to go into the final round in a tie with Evans for 72nd position. Thomas Sharkey (Helensburgh, Scotland) scratched three strokes off his card in the second round to finish five spots back from Deal and Evans in a tie for 77th.
Hayden Anderson (Knoxville, Tenn.), competing as an individual, closed out the second round with a 2-over 74. He shares 59th place with six individuals who also recorded a 152 total.
Georgia Southern starts the final round tomorrow, April 3rd, at 9:45 a.m. The Eagles are paired with Washington and Houston for the final outing. Thomas Sharkey begins play for Georgia Southern on the 10th hole with each player teeing off separately in nine-minute increments.
