Softball Returns Home to Face Mercer and Mount St. Mary's

STATESBORO, Ga. - Georgia Southern Softball, fresh off a 16-game road trip, returns home to play host to Mercer and Mount St. Mary's in consecutive doubleheaders on Wednesday (March 9th) and Thursday March 10th) afternoon at 3 p.m. The Eagles and Bears are familiar foes after Georgia Southern downed Mercer in the season's opening weekend by 7-5 and 3-2 margins. The Eagles lead the all-time series by a 40-10 margin.
Mount St. Mary's visits Statesboro, Thursday, for the first time as the teams face off for the second time in program history. GSU downed the Mount, 5-2, in the Charlotte 49ers Classic in 2004.
The first 50 fans through the gate on Wednesday will receive a free GSU sprit band. On Thursday, the first 50 fans will receive free pizza courtesy of Domino's Pizza.
Mercer has gone 11-6 since the season-opening weekend at Eagle Field including a string of seven-straight wins. On Monday, Mercer split a doubleheader with UConn, winning the opener 4-0 before falling 4-3 in the finale. Sara Stukes paces the Bear bats with a .407 batting average and four home runs. She is slugging .764 with 24 RBI. Kari Chambers has a 5-4 record in the pitching circle and a 1.86 ERA.
The Mount is 3-2 on the season after having three games cancelled due to weather. Mount St. Mary's is on a two-game win streak and has defeated George Mason (2-1), UMBC (9-0) and Iona (4-3). Beth Everist leads the team with a .438 batting average and a .750 slugging percentage. Amanda Sadowl is 2-0 in the circle with a 0.50 ERA.
Junior Marie Fogle (Rincon, Ga.) scored Southern Conference Player of the Week honors last week by hitting .625 with a 1.375 slugging percentage in two games against No. 7 Tennessee and one against Louisiana-Monroe. She is tied for the SoCon lead with five home runs this year. Freshman Allie Miles (Dacula, Ga.) leads the Eagles and SoCon with 52 strikeouts in 49.1 innings of work. Senior Brianna Streetmon (Winder, Ga.) has the best pitching record with a 4-3 mark and holding opposing batters to a .224 batting average.
