Eagles Close Day 11th at the Cleveland Golf Palmetto

AIKEN, S.C. - The Georgia Southern Golf team fired 28 birdies on the first day of the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate to card a 27-over 587 (296-291) for 11th place going into Tuesday's final round at the 6,617-yard, par-70 Palmetto Golf Club. The Eagles, only two strokes back from 10th place, finished the second round five strokes lighter than their morning session. Florian Sander (Bregenz, Austria) led the second-round charge, posting a 1-over 71, the sophomore's best round in his second appearance at the Palmetto. Alabama started the afternoon in fourth place and moved into first place going the final round after recording a 3-under 277 over the final 18 holes. The Crimson Tide also was represented in the individual standings as Bud Cauley leads the field with an 8-under 132.
"We just made too many doubles today to be as competitive as we could have been," said Head Coach Larry Mays. "We need to go out tomorrow and be more consistent and minimize our mistakes."
Sander opened the day with a 4-over 74, but shaved three strokes off his tournament total by day's end to finish in a tie for 26th place, carding a 5-over 145. Logan Blondell (Lakeland, Fla.) and Matt Deal (Statesboro, Ga.) both finished back-to-back behind Sanders. Blondell scattered seven birdies over 36 holes to sign for a 6-over 146 which puts the senior in a 32nd-place tie. Deal, opening the day with a 5-over 75, recorded a 2-over 72 to position himself in a tie for 36th going into the final round.
Lewis Gruber (Tallahassee, Fla.) finished the day in a tie for 61st, posting an 11-over 151 (77-74). Hayden Anderson (Knoxville, Tenn.) goes into tomorrow's final round two strokes back of Gruber with an 13-over 153 (75-78) to tie for 72nd place.
Tuesday's final-round pairing will be an all-Southern Conference affair as Georgia Southern tees off on the 10th hole with members Furman and Wofford. The Eagles begin at 10:40 a.m. with Hayden Anderson.
