Golf Places Third at Amelia National Intercollegiate

The Eagles overcame a shaky start Monday morning by shaving 16 strokes off their score heading into the final round. Sitting in fourth place and eight strokes behind Virginia Commonwealth, Georgia Southern posted three scores of par or better on Tuesday to pass VCU for third place.
Gruber's 215 (75-70-70) was his third score under par this fall and Hartman (72-72-71=215) became the third Eagle this season to break par in his first collegiate start. Freshman Charlie Martin (LaGrange, Ga.) shot 218 (75-70-73) to tie for 12th place and freshman teammate Scott Wolfes shot 219 to finish tied for 14th place.
"Our last two rounds were both under par and nine of our final ten rounds were 73 or better--that's the kind of consistency we've been striving for this fall," said Head Coach Larry Mays. "With the exception of our tournament in Durham, it was a really successful fall for us. I'm pleased with our effort and we'll continue working hard to get better."
Georgia Southern Golf will return to the practice links to prepare for the spring part of its 2011-12 schedule which begins Feb. 11-12 when they travel to the Gator Invitational in Gainesville, Florida.
